Rubin started Def Jam Records during his senior year using his school’s four-track recorder. Additionally, he founded the punk band Hose, whose song was Def Jam’s 1982 debut album.
Early life
Rick Rubin, real name Frederick Jay Rubin, was born on March 10, 1963, in Long Beach, New York. His father, Michael Micky, was a shoemaker and his mother, Linda, was a housewife.
He attended Long Beach High School, where he learned to play guitar and write songs. Rubin grew up listening to punk music, and he and his friends started a funk band called The Pricks.
During his senior year of high school, he composed Def Jam records using the school’s four-track recorder. He didn’t know it at the time, but he had just created one of the biggest labels in the music business.
Profession
Def Jam recording
Rubin continued his love of punk and created the band, Hose. He designed much of the band’s slow-paced, blues-influenced sound that gained traction in New York City in the 1980s.
The hose would be the first unofficial group of Def Jam artists, but over time Rubin’s passion for music turned to the hip-hop genre.
So he stayed away from punk and focused on honing his skills as a hip-hop record producer.
Rubin meets DJ Jazzy Jazz, his brain starts to think, and he learns more and more about Hip Hop production. The Jazz introduced Rubin to Russell Simmons, who helped get Def Jam up and running.
Rubin, with Simmons’ help, set out to find and find more hip-hop artists in New York City.
He’s worked with LL Cool J, Public Enemy, The Beastie Boys, and Run-D.M.C, and helped them produce some of their biggest hits to date. Def Jam has grown significantly in popularity and is one of the best-selling brands.
Real estate
Rubin owns many prestigious properties in Los Angeles. In 1992, Rick paid $2 million for a 9,300-square-foot gated mansion on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood. Soon after, he bought a 4-bedroom haunted house dubbed “The Mansion” in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon area for $785,000. The Red Hot Chili Peppers lived in this mansion when they recorded their successful album “Blood Sugar Sex Magik”. After that experience, Rubin has essentially become a full-time recording space and has been used by Audioslave, Maroon 5, Linkin Park, Slipknot, The Mars Volta, and more.
